Workshop | parental mourning for the loss of a child

The workshop will be about parental mourning for the loss of a child. Shira Billet will discuss with us the similarities she discovered between a Jewish midrashic tradition on this topic that is first attested in the middle ages, and an Islamic tradition on this same topic. Both of these sources examine the concept of parental grief over the loss of a child through a theological framework. Prof. Billet would particularly like to analyse with us the Islamic sources concerned.

is assistant professor of Jewish Thought and Ethics at JTS, academic director of JTS’s Hendel Center for Ethics and Justice, and the BA and MA advisor for the Jewish Ethics program at JTS.
